On August 20, 2019, the U.S. State Department, through its embassy in France announced a revised reciprocity schedule for France for the E visa category.
Specifically, the validity period of E-1 and E-2 visas issued to French foreign nationals has been drastically reduced to just 15 months (a year and 3-motnhs). Before the announcement, French E visas were issued with a validity period of 60-months (or five years).
Effective from August 29, 2019, the new policy will be enforced.
The U.S. embassy in France issued the notification below on its website:
Please note that effective August 29, 2019, the reciprocity schedule for France will be revised for E visas. This change will decrease the validity commensurate to the treatment afforded to U.S. citizens by the Government of France. E visas will be valid for 15 months.
The reciprocity tables displayed on travel.state.gov will be updated to reflect the changes above.
Treaty Trader (E-1) and Treaty Investor (E-2) visas are for citizens of countries with which the United States maintains treaties of commerce and navigation, including France.
Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Treaty Trader (E-1) and Treaty Investor (E-2) visas are for citizens of countries with which the United States maintains treaties of commerce and navigation.
You must be coming to the United States to:
- engage in substantial trade, including trade in services or technology, in qualifying activities, principally between the United States and the treaty country; or
- develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which you have invested a substantial amount of capital.
